Within the framework of the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture (OPCAT) National Preventive Mechanism (NPM), Ombudsman Dr. Ákos Kozma and his staff members made an on-site inspection at the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County Remand Prison on 10 February 2021.
The Commissioner for Fundamental Rights was received in Miskolc by Counsellor, Major General dr. Tamás Tóth, Director General of the Hungarian Prison Service Headquarters, and Counsellor, Colonel Tamás Szeidl, Commander of the prison establishment. The Ombudsman was provided with detailed information, among others, about the operation of the institution, the current number of detainees, and the healthcare measures taken by the institution for the prevention of the coronavirus pandemic. After the briefing, the Commissioner concluded his visit by inspecting the institution. As part of the capacity increase project of the Hungarian Prison Service, the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County Remand Prison has been expanded by a new unit, as a result of which its capacity has reached 847 persons.
