Commissioner for Fundamental Rights of Hungary Dr. Ákos Kozma and Deputy-Commissioner for Fundamental Rights, Ombudsman for Future Generations Dr. Gyula Bándi paid a visit to the Fertő-Hanság National Park on 25 April 2023.
The Ombudsman and his deputy were received by Director Mrs. Kulcsár-Roth Matthaea. In the morning, a professional meeting was held with the management of the national park in the centre of the Directorate at Kócsagvár in Sarród, then some on-site programmes followed. At the meeting, the operation of the national park, its major projects, the key achievements of its environmental protection activities, its property management activities and the current challenges were discussed. From among the problems, special attention was paid to the adverse effects exerted on nature and wildlife by the droughts occurring due to the climate change, as well as the drying occurring as consequence of inappropriate water management and water governance, which affect wetlands, saline areas and forests alike. During the visit to the Fertő region, the visitors had the chance to inspect the saline lake and prairie habitat restoration areas and their treatment, as well as the visitor centre in Lászlómajor. In the Hanság region, wetland habitat restoration areas, the marshland meadows, the alder forests, the visitor centre in Öntésmajor and the Bormászpuszta manor centre in Lébény were shown to the guests. During the visit, it was possible to inspect a high number of protected and strictly protected plant and animal species.
